Overview

Overview for Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain

This well known landmark is one of Chicago's most popular.  Designed by artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain opened in the summer of 2004 at a cost of $17 million.  Two 50ft glass block towers rest upon a black granite reflecting pool and display two randomly selected faces "conversing" with each other.  The faces, which represent the diversity of Chicago in both age and ethnicity, are displayed on the towers through the use of light-emitting diodes.  (LEDs)  More than 1,000 faces were filmed by staff members at the Art Institute of Chicago.

It's good to be a kid at the Crown Fountain during the warm season.  Plan accordingly as the little ones will likely end up drenched.
